This is what the old 'finger burners' looked like.

Here is what the old style illumination looked like with incandescent lamps that draw 1000 milliamps. These photos were taken with an iPhone, so they are somewhat fuzzy.

Old-style incandescent illumination. Even with maximum brightness, you do have to aim the lamps pretty carefully at what instruments you want to see, because the 'spot' is pretty narrow.
